Bangkok bars for a date: 5 kinds of evening

Choosing a bar in Bangkok for a date is harder than it looks. The city has thousands of them, but an evening at a cocktail counter in Thonglor and an evening on a rooftop near Sathorn are two different dates — a different pace, a different bill, a different conversation. The mistake is almost always the same one: the place gets picked from a photograph rather than from the evening you actually want.

Below are five kinds, not five names. Names in Bangkok change fast; kinds last for decades. We'll look at what evening each one gives you, what it costs for two, and how far ahead you need to book.

The short version

First date, you don't know each other well — a cocktail bar with a counter. A pause in the conversation doesn't hang there: something is always happening behind the bar.
You want to eat, not only drink — a restaurant with a bar. Costs more, but the evening doesn't fall apart into "so where now?".
You want the impression — a rooftop. Best from November to February; book at least 3–5 days ahead.
The conversation matters more than the setting — a wine bar. Quietest, and the most predictable bill.
Second or third date — a speakeasy. Needs you to already be relaxed with each other.

Why the kind matters more than the name

Bars in Bangkok open and close quickly. The place a friend recommended last year may have changed hands, changed its menu, or gone. What does not change is the kind: a cocktail bar with a counter works the same way whatever it is called.

The kind decides the three things that make or break a date — noise (can you talk without raising your voice), pace (how long you can sit without feeling you should move on), and a way out of silence (is there something you can both look at when the conversation stalls). Get the kind right and the name becomes a detail.

The five kinds

1. A cocktail bar with a counter

Thonglor and Ekkamai are the heart of this kind. Sit at the counter, not at a table — that is the whole point. When the conversation stalls you both have the same thing to look at: the person making the drinks is right in front of you, and asking what's in the glass is a question that never comes at the wrong moment.

Two drinks each plus something to pick at is around 1,600–3,000 baht for two. The noise level lets you talk. The right time is after eight; earlier the room is usually empty enough to be awkward.

2. A restaurant with a bar

Sathorn and Silom have the most of these. The advantage is that the evening doesn't break: you never have to decide halfway through where to go next, which is the moment a lot of dates end without anyone intending it.

For two, 2,500–5,000 baht depending on whether you order wine by the bottle or the glass. Book 2–3 days ahead for Friday and Saturday nights.

3. A rooftop

The kind with the biggest visual effect and the biggest risk at the same time. Bangkok has rooftops from five-star hotels down to small bars on old buildings around Charoenkrung.

Two things to know before booking. One: many have a dress code — flip-flops and shorts get turned away at the door, and being turned away in front of your date is the worst possible opening. Two: rain. See the season section below.

For two, roughly 3,000–6,000 baht. Book 3–5 days ahead, and always ask for a table on the edge — an inside table at a rooftop is an ordinary bar at a higher price.

4. A wine bar

Ari and Sukhumvit soi 31 are where this kind is strongest. The quietest of the five, which means it exposes a conversation that isn't going anywhere — if the two of you have nothing to talk about, a wine bar will let you know quickly. Whether that is a feature or a flaw depends on what you want.

The most predictable bill: three or four glasses plus cheese runs 1,800–3,500 baht.

5. A speakeasy

An unmarked door, an entrance behind a fridge, a password you're supposed to know — fun once you are relaxed with each other, and awkward when you aren't. On a first date, standing in front of a door you can't find for ten minutes is not charming.

Save it for the second or third date. For two, 1,500–2,800 baht.

When to book and how

The rules that hold for every kind in Bangkok:

  • Friday and Saturday nights need a booking, every kind, no exceptions. A place you can walk into on a weekday is full by nine on a Friday.
  • Book by phone or LINE, not by Instagram. Instagram messages to Bangkok venues can go unread for days.
  • Confirm again on the day. A booking made five days ahead and never confirmed goes missing more often than it should. A short message in the afternoon is enough.
  • Give the exact number of people. A table for two and a table for four are in different parts of the room, and the part of the room changes the evening.

Season: what changes in the rains

Bangkok has three seasons that genuinely affect which bar to choose.

November to February — the best stretch. It actually cools down, and rooftops and outdoor terraces work at full strength. It is also, for the same reason, when you need to book furthest ahead.

March to May — the hottest. Outdoors only works after nine, and even then it stays humid. Indoor kinds do better.

June to October — the rainy season. Bangkok rain is heavy and short, usually from late afternoon into the early evening. The one rule that matters: if you book a rooftop, ask whether they have an indoor fallback. A good place always does. A place that doesn't will cancel your table at six, and your evening starts with finding somewhere else in the rain.

The traffic in the rains is real too: double whatever travel time you expect, or pick somewhere you can reach on the BTS or MRT — in Bangkok that isn't a convenience, it is the difference between arriving on time and arriving forty minutes late.

The budget of an evening

The numbers in the table above are drinks and food. A real evening usually has three more items people forget to count.

  • Getting there — a taxi or ride-hail in Bangkok on a Friday evening costs 1.5–2× the usual. Allow 300–600 baht each way.
  • Service charge and tax — mid-range and above add 10% plus 7% VAT, which makes the actual bill about 17% higher than the menu.
  • A second stop — a date that goes well usually has one. Allowing another 800–1,500 baht is better than being the one who has to say that's enough.

A realistic total for a first date of the cocktail-bar kind in Bangkok is around 2,500–4,000 baht, and that is the figure worth having in mind before you leave the house.

Safety: what to agree before you meet

This part isn't about the bar. It is about the evening, and it matters more than the choice of venue.

  • A public place for the first time, always. All five kinds above are public. That is not a coincidence.
  • Tell someone you trust where you are. The name of the place and a rough time. One message is enough.
  • Settle the money before you meet. Negotiating at the table ruins the evening, and negotiating afterwards is worse. On this platform the terms are recorded in the deal before you meet, and the money sits in escrow until both sides confirm.
  • Arrange your own way home. Don't let getting home depend on anyone else. The fare back belongs in the budget from the start.

Frequently asked questions

Which district for a first date in Bangkok?

Thonglor or Ekkamai if you are both on the Sukhumvit side; Sathorn or Silom if you are coming from opposite directions. The only criterion that matters is that both of you can get there on the BTS or MRT — not which district sounds better.

How much should it cost so it doesn't look stingy?

2,500–4,000 baht for two is the range nobody questions. Spending more doesn't improve the date proportionally — the kind and the district matter more than the amount.

Is a rooftop worth it in the rainy season?

Only if the venue has an indoor fallback and you asked before booking. If not, move it to November. A rooftop cancelled by rain is an evening that starts with solving a problem.

How far ahead should I book?

Weekdays 1–2 days for every kind. Friday and Saturday 3–5 days for rooftops and restaurants. From November to February add two days.

What if they're very late?

Bangkok traffic is real and twenty minutes is not a signal. Being late without a message is. Agree in advance that you'll say if you're running behind, and it stops being an issue.
